Claude Code has no price of its own. You pay for it through a Claude subscription or by the token, and the two behave very differently once a team starts using agents all day.

**Short answer:** Anthropic's documentation puts the average at around $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month across enterprise deployments, with 90% of users staying under $30 per active day. On a subscription, Claude Pro is $20 a month and Claude Max is $100 or $200 a month.

## How is Claude Code priced?

| Way to pay | Price | How usage is limited |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Pro | $20 per month | Rolling five-hour and weekly usage windows |
| Claude Max | $100 per month (5x Pro usage) or $200 per month (20x) | Same windows, larger allowance |
| Team and Enterprise seats | Per seat. Seat tier (Standard or Premium) sets the allowance. See claude.com/pricing for current seat prices. | Per-seat allowance, shared with Claude chat. Admins can allow usage credits past it and set spend limits. |
| API (Claude Console, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry) | Per token | Workspace spend limits or your cloud's budget controls |

API rates per million tokens, as of October 8, 2026:

| Model | Input | Output | Cache read |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | $0.20 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | $0.10 |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100,000 tokens) | $0.10 | $0.50 | $0.01 |

## What does a Claude Code session cost?

Anthropic's cost documentation shows a sample session on Claude Sonnet 4.6: 1,200 input tokens, 5,300 output tokens, 940,000 cache-read tokens and 50,000 cache-write tokens. Total: $0.55.

- Cache reads: about $0.28
- Cache writes: about $0.19
- Output: about $0.08
- Fresh input: less than one cent

The prompt you typed is a rounding error. The context is the bill. Claude Code sends the conversation, file contents and tool results with every request, so cost follows context size and the number of turns.

## What drives a Claude Code bill up?

- **Long sessions.** A one-line question in a session that has been open all day still pays for the whole conversation.
- **Cache misses.** On API billing the cache lifetime is five minutes by default. Come back from a coffee and the next message reprocesses everything.
- **Opus as the default.** Opus 5.5 costs twice what Sonnet 5.5 does per token.
- **Subagents and agent teams.** Each one has its own context window. Anthropic notes agent teams use roughly 7x the tokens of a standard session when teammates run in plan mode.
- **Thinking tokens.** Extended thinking is billed as output.
- **Scheduled tasks and background check-ins.** They fire with full context while you are away.
- **MCP servers and a large CLAUDE.md.** Both sit in context on every turn.

## How do you reduce Claude Code token usage without reducing output quality?

- Run `/clear` between unrelated tasks. It costs nothing and resets the context.
- Default to Sonnet. Switch to Opus for hard design problems. Give simple subagents Haiku.
- Keep CLAUDE.md under 200 lines. Move workflow-specific instructions into skills, which load only when used.
- Disable MCP servers you are not using. Prefer CLI tools such as `gh` and `aws` where they exist.
- Use hooks to filter noisy output. Returning only failing tests instead of the full run keeps thousands of tokens out of context.
- Send verbose work (test runs, log digging) to a subagent so only the summary comes back.
- Use plan mode before large changes. A wrong first attempt is the most expensive thing an agent does.
- Write specific prompts. "Improve this codebase" makes the agent read all of it.
- Lower the effort level for simple tasks.

Check `/usage` to see what is consuming tokens in a session.

## How should a team budget for Claude Code?

At Anthropic's stated average, 50 engineers on API billing cost $7,500 to $12,500 a month, or $90,000 to $150,000 a year. Start with a pilot group, measure, then roll out.

- Set workspace spend limits in the Claude Console, or per-user limits on Team and Enterprise plans.
- Export per-user token and cost metrics through OpenTelemetry.
- Track cost per merged pull request, not only cost per seat. An engineer at $13 a day who merges two pull requests is at $6.50 per PR. That number tells you whether spend is buying output.

## What cost does Claude Code not show you?

The agent's token bill is one cost. The other is what its code costs to run. A coding agent has no idea what a full-table DynamoDB scan, a verbose log line in a hot loop, or an uncached 10,000-token prompt costs at your production volume. It writes code that works. Whether that code is cheap to run is left to chance.

The same engineers own both bills. Frugal plugs into Claude Code and Cursor so the agent has cost context while it writes, and reviews pull requests for cost increases before merge. The aim is code that is efficient by default, so the waste never ships.

## FAQ

### How much does Claude Code cost per month?

$20 on Claude Pro, $100 or $200 on Claude Max, or around $150 to $250 per developer at API rates according to Anthropic's enterprise averages.

### Is Claude Code included in Claude Pro?

Yes. Claude Code is included in Claude Pro and Max. On Team and Enterprise plans it depends on the seat tier. The free plan does not include it.

### Is the API or a subscription cheaper for Claude Code?

It depends on usage. A developer averaging $13 per active day over 20 days lands around $260 at API rates, so a Max seat can be cheaper for heavy daily users and the API cheaper for occasional ones. Measure with `/usage` before choosing.

### Why did my Claude Code cost spike?

Usually long sessions that were never cleared, Opus left as the default model, or subagents and scheduled tasks running in the background.

Agents made writing code cheap. Running it is still billed by the call.
